Software Engineer Working Student for United Domains Development team (hybrid)

About the team:

At United-Domains - part of IONOS Group - we power the backbone of domain registration and management services for over 300 000 customers worldwide with access to 1000+ TLDs. Our Backend Team is the engine behind seamless domain ordering, DNS management, and scalable infrastructure. 

About the Working Student program:

This program is intended for students (currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program) who want to gain experience, following what they learned in a specialized faculty, in order to become IT specialists. 

About the role:

We’re looking for a bright student to join our team as a Working Student, in the team that is tasked with maintaining and enhancing our domain ordering backend service in United Domains / IONOS Group. You will learn domain registration business logic and how to design, optimize, and maintain critical systems handling high-volume transactions.

We offer on-the-job training. If your skills and experience do not entirely match the job description, but you have the technical experience and ability to quickly pick up new skills we are ready to teach you. This extends even to Perl, if you’re experienced in another programming language and open to learning Perl, we welcome you. 

Required experience:

• Experience working with Linux in command line: installing Linux software from source and managing Linux packages and services;
• Basic understanding of networking (addresses/subnets, domain resolution, routing, basic understanding of TCP, at least basic understanding of how firewalls work);
• Database Design: experience with querying/modifying relational databases;
• Programming experience in any programming language, showing us a non-trivial project will be an advantage.

We appreciate:

• APIs & Integrations: Experience with remote APIs (JSONRPC/Swagger/OpenAPI, XMLRPC/SOAP or REST). We use the EPP protocol extensively so some familiarity with XML will be appreciated;
• BASH scripting;
• Version Control: Git;
• Ability to read English, write English intelligibly and be able to communicate verbally in English with other non-English speakers.

Would be a plus:

• Perl expertise: Backend development, CPAN module usage
• Domain industry knowledge (DNS, nameservers, domain lifecycle)
• Containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
• JavaScript proficiency
• CI/CD pipeline design (Jenkins, GitLab CI).
• Ability to read German.
